Vitamin D - Optimum Levels Are Crucial For Your Health

I hesitate to single out the value and need for one vitamin. Nutrients work together for your health. However, there is much talk about Vitamin D today. Studies show that almost all of us are sorely deficient in Vitamin D. So what? Well, it seems Vitamin D is very essential for your immune system to function properly, or at all.

You might ask why all the talk about Vitamin D today? Haven't we known this before. Actually the study of Vitamins and your health is relatively new. Linus Pauling was one of the first to say Vitamins were important to our health. When Dr. Pauling first said Vitamin C was crucial to health he was all but ridiculed. In 1966, he advocated taking at least 3 grams of Vitamin C to fight off colds. He published "Vitamin C and the Common Cold" in 1970. Thirty years later studies are showing not only was he correct in recognizing the value of Vitamin C to the body, but all the vitamins are necessary for health.

Prior to this the accepted approach to health is eat right, exercise and if you are feeling poorly, get a prescription. My body is not sick because it is missing a drug. It is sick because it is lacking nutrients. The body is an amazing thing and will take care of itself if you feed it properly. If you were allowed only one car in your lifetime, how well would you take care of it? Would you use the best oil you could find? Because if you don't that car will fail you. You are given only one body. It has to last you a lifetime. If you don't feed it properly and take care of that one body, it will fail you. Most of us will live too short and die too long.

Back to the topic of Vitamin D, your body will manufacture Vitamin D when exposed to sunshine. That's right. You can get the Vitamin D you need for your health from simple exposure to sunshine. Well, how can we all be deficient in Vitamin D if all you need to do is get sunshine? How much sunshine do you get daily? And if you are in the sun did you lather your exposed skin with sun screen? Sun screen blocks out the ultra violet rays. Wait a minute, aren't we all suppose to protect our skin from sun exposure? Skin cancer may not be caused by excessive exposure to sun. Sunburn is definitely damage to the skin so you don't want a burn.
